Security, a topic we are seeing in the media a lot these days. We hear about the large retailors that have breaches. Adidas, Macys and Sears have all made announcements of breaches this year. What we don’t hear about is the number of Small Medium Businesses (SMB) that have suffered an attack. In a recent State of SMB Cybersecurity survey, 55 percent of SMB respondents indicated they have experienced a cyber-attack in the past year, and another 50 percent have experienced a data breach involving customer and employee information. Due to the increase of attacks on SMB’s, Karpel Solutions is in the process of testing additional security tools that we will be adding to our portfolio.
“Why would someone attack my business?” you may ask. The reality is that Cyber Criminals are indiscriminate in who they attack. They look for weaknesses and vulnerabilities they can exploit regardless of what size or type of business it is. Every business needs protection.
“My IT company is taking care of our security” you say. Well, most of them do provide some level of security. If you are one of our Managed Services clients, you have a basic level of security in place. The problem is that the threats are evolving. That basic level of security that was very effective a few years ago, won’t stop all the attacks that occur today.
“What can we do to be safe?” you might ask. A great question. This is the first part of a series of blogs that we will be publishing over the next few months. The goal is to raise awareness of what organizations should be doing to reduce their risk in the cyber arena. In some cases, it may be changing some internal processes like “Passwords will be reset every 90 days”. In some cases, you may need additional security tools. The first step in the process is to conduct a Risk Assessment to determine what, if anything, you need to change.
